Vaccination not required to perform Umrah in Ramadan

Author:
Thu, 2021-04-01 02:00

JEDDAH: Pilgrims wishing to perform Umrah during Ramadan this year will not have to be vaccinated against the coronavirus (COVID-19), according to the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah.

While answering a query about vaccinations on Twitter, the ministry’s customer service center account said that inoculations are not a requirement yet to get permission for Umrah during Ramadan.

However, the ministry earlier this week issued a circular that requires sectors operating in Hajj and Umrah-related services to vaccinate their entire staff before Ramadan starts on April 12. Workers not vaccinated must provide proof of a negative PCR test result, renewed every seven days at the facility’s expense.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Municipal, Rural Affairs and Housing said that it will intensify inspection tours during Ramadan at gathering places to ensure social distancing.

Authorities have shut down 11 mosques in six regions around the Kingdom after 11 cases of COVID-19 were reported among worshippers.

INNUMBER

390,007 - total number of COVID-19 cases

378,083 - total number of recoveries

6,669 - total number of deaths

The Saudi Ministry of Health announced there are 5,255 active COVID-19 cases as 585 had been reported in the past 24 hours. Of the active cases, 693 are in critical condition.

The total number of infections in the Kingdom to date is 390,007.

Of the newly reported cases, 234 were recorded in Riyadh, followed by Makkah (103) and the Eastern Province (110). The regions with the lowest recorded numbers were Najran and Baha with five cases each.

The MoH reported 369 new recoveries, raising the total number to 378,083. The Kingdom’s recovery rate has decreased to 96.9 percent.

Six people died due to complications from COVID-19, which raised the national death toll to 6,669.

Since the launch of the COVID-19 vaccine campaign in the Kingdom last December, the ministry has administered 4.4 million inoculations.

More than 60,000 PCR tests were conducted in the past 24 hours, raising the total number of PCR tests administered in the Kingdom to more than 15 million.

On Twitter, the ministry’s customer service center account said that inoculations are not a requirement yet to get permission for Umrah during Ramadan. (SPA)

Saudi Commerce Ministry warns shoppers against online scams

Thu, 2021-04-01 01:41

JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia has recently become the target of online fraudsters and scammers whose fake logos impersonate government entities in an attempt to lure not only naive online shoppers but experienced ones.

The Saudi Ministry of Commerce renewed its warning to consumers against shopping with unknown and unreliable foreign electronic stores. It said that monitoring and follow-up operations had led to group of websites belonging to a Chinese store, which was blocked earlier, in addition to 184 links to sites with different names.

The ministry confirmed that it is continuing its efforts to track and block these links to protect consumers in coordination with the competent authorities.

It added that these websites were exploiting social media platforms to target the Saudi market with fake and misleading ads and low-quality goods.

In its statement, the ministry said that the violating websites had a number of things in common: “They use random website addresses; they lack information about the facility, its address, and contact numbers; they communicate with shoppers only via emails; they intensify their online ads through social media and video-sharing social networking service platforms such as Twitter, Snapchat and TikTok.”

The blocked sites, the statement added, use the Arabic language and Saudi currency in their dealings with customers. The violating websites are also designed to simulate the websites of electronic stores.

The Ministry of Commerce noted that the scam websites post pictures that do not match real products. These same products, which are displayed with fake discounts and offers, are available on other international sites at much lower prices.

The ministry urges consumers to only deal with trusted stores, and not to respond to social media that promotes unknown and unreliable foreign websites, and to report them through the https://mci.gov.sa/C-app, or by calling 1900 or visiting the ministry’s official website.

A tweet that has been pinned on the customer service account of the Saudi Post since November 2020 warns against dealing with websites impersonating the official logo of the Saudi Post to request personal or financial data.

The official account stresses that customers must gain information through the approved channels of the Saudi Post.

Naif Al-Jaweeni, a Saudi real estate investment trainer, on Sunday fell victim to a scam that cost him SR26,000 ($6,932), which was taken from his credit card in no more than eight minutes to an unknown bank account.

In a video that circulated widely on social media, Al-Jaweeni said that he had been expecting a shipment he had ordered to arrive.

“I received an email with the name of the Saudi Post on it, and I thought it was the items I had bought online. The sender requested the numbers of my ID card, mobile phone and credit card,” Al-Jaweeni told Saudi news website, Akhbaar24. “For I was expecting the delivery on the same day, I did not think twice to provide them with the numbers.”

He then noticed that large amounts of cash were withdrawn from his account, and he immediately reported the issue to his bank to stop further withdrawals from his credit card balance, estimated at SR50,0000.

“At first I thought that the money withdrawn from me was in Saudi riyals, which meant that I lost SR43,000 out of 50,000 in my credit card, but then I found out that the money withdrawn from my card account was in the Danish currency,” he said.

Al-Jaweeni said that he later came to learn that the website that “stole” his money was a Danish website called “Kiosk Bien.”

The real estate trainer called on everyone to be cautious when dealing with electronic stores. He also hoped that local banks would make more efforts to protect people from such scams.

Al-Jaweeni, who has more than 54,000 Twitter followers, said in a tweet that he had received messages from people who have been scammed in the same way.

“I received many messages in which the senders confirmed they have lost big amounts of money in such scams. A man sent me a message claiming that he lost over SR60,000 in a similar fraud. A young girl also texted me saying she paid her whole dowry money in a similar scam,” he said.

“It is clear that fraud has developed greatly and it is also obvious that people need greater financial measures to protect them. Awareness alone is not enough to solve this problem. Fraudulent gangs seem to have tight power on us.”

DiplomaticQuarter: British envoy praises Saudi Green, Middle East Green initiatives

Thu, 2021-04-01 01:44

RIYADH: British Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Neil Crompton praised the “Saudi Green” and the “Middle East Green” initiatives announced by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, stressing that these initiatives will help in protecting the planet.

“Fantastic to see the Crown Prince’s commitment to protect the planet and combat climate change through the ‘Saudi Green Initiative’ and the ‘Green Middle East Initiative,’” the envoy tweeted.

He posted the comment while retweeting Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture Abdul Rahman Al-Fadli, who also applauded the initiatives for “protecting Earth and nature and achieving global goals.”

In another tweet, the British envoy, speaking of the UK and Saudi Arabia, wrote: “Building on the G20 and ahead of @COP26 we look forward to working together to deliver the vision of a cleaner, greener world.”

The UK will host the 26th UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow between Nov. 1-12, 2021. The COP26 Summit is expected to bring parties together to work toward the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The Saudi Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture and the British Embassy in Riyadh jointly hosted a virtual roundtable last week to mark the celebration of Saudi Arabia’s Environment Week. It was also part of the “Together for our Planet” campaign, which aims to build awareness on the urgent need for action in the lead-up to the COP26.

The crown prince’s initiatives aim to chart a path for the region in protecting the planet and achieving global targets in confronting climate change.

The region faces significant climate challenges, such as desertification, and an immediate social and economic risk — $13 billion is lost to dust storms in the region every year, while air pollution from greenhouse gases is estimated to have shortened average Saudi life expectancy by 1.5 years.

The Saudi Green Initiative aims to raise vegetation cover, reduce carbon emissions, combat pollution and land degradation, preserve marine life and plant 10 billion trees within the Kingdom in the coming decades. The initiative will also work to reduce carbon emissions by more than 4 percent of global contributions through an ambitious renewable energy program that will generate 50 percent of the Kingdom’s energy from renewables by 2030.

Saudi Arabia will also work to raise the percentage of protected areas to over 30 percent of its total land area, exceeding the current global target of 17 percent.

Moreover, the Kingdom will start working on the Middle East Green Initiative in coordination with Gulf Cooperation Council states and Middle Eastern countries to plant an additional 40 billion trees in the Middle East.

RIYADH: The Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) and their US and Pakistani counterparts have begun a joint military exercise at Mushaf Air Base in Punjab province, the Saudi Defense Ministry said on Tuesday.
The Aces Meet 2021 maneuvers were launched on Monday in the presence of Maj. Gen. Awad Al-Zahrani, the Saudi Military Attache in Pakistan, and Chief of Air Staff (Operations) Vice Marshal Waqas Sulehri.
A number of RSAF Tornado combat aircraft are taking part in the exercise, together with their air, technical and support crews. How Misk Academy empowered young Saudis to prosper in the modern workplace

Author:
Wed, 2021-03-31 01:45

RIYADH: Almost 2,000 young Saudis have advanced their careers thanks to skills developed through an academy designed to diversify the Kingdom’s workforce.

The Misk Academy was set up in 2018 as a collaboration between Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Misk Foundation and General Assembly, a global education company.

The academy provides young Saudis the resources needed to compete in the global labour market. Using its expertise, General Assembly created digital and in person courses to assist students in learning new skills in the digital world.

The partnership has helped thousands of fresh graduates and seasoned professionals excel in their careers.

General Assembly said 1,993 Saudis had graduated from 74 courses so far. The program has expanded from Riyadh into Jeddah, Madinah and Khobar.

The aim has been to train Saudis with a modern curriculum to keep up with the technological advances in the digital age in line with the Kingdom’s extensive 2030 reform program.

The courses guide students in data analytics, data science, digital marketing, and the use of software engineering tools.

The General Assembly has instructors from many countries with backgrounds in tech giants like Google, Facebook, and Adobe.

“The program was full of new experiences for me,” said Afra Al-Zahrani, a user experience (UX) design graduate who took part in one of the programs. “Besides learning about UX, I got to deal with technology, which was intimidating for me, I got to also learn about myself.

“The instructors were great, and the classmates I just loved the environment and the community, I felt like I belonged right away.”

Al-Zahrani enrolled in the Misk program after struggling to find the perfect fit for her career from her sociology major.

She worked as a kindergarten teacher for more than four years but knew she had to continue her education to find a career path that she was passionate about.

“I started reading more about UX design and I couldn't believe how much it spoke to me, especially the research side, she said. “So I decided to apply, even though it was in another city and I didn’t plan how to move, it felt like the right thing to do, and I was so happy when I got accepted.”

Al-Zahrani was assigned a career coach who guided her in the program and advised her to apply to UXbert Labs, as a UX research executive in Riyadh and soon after she was hired.

“I needed to learn the foundations in structured methods and this helped me a lot, but it started with keeping an open mind and believing that I can learn something new,” she said, reflecting on her time on the course. “Perseverance is another key, controlling the emotional journey and quieting down the voice that tells you to give up, is what will get you across the finish line.”

Fahda Al-Arifi, a language translations graduate, wanted to shift her career into marketing and so completed courses in digital marketing and user experience design.

“General Assembly doesn’t only build the technical skills for me, but also the soft skills and how to be a professional,” she said. “I had an ongoing career coaching session, which helped me polish my career essential skills.”

As she was working full time, Al-Arifi decided to merge her daily work with a 10-week course to advance her skills. She decided to complete the user experience design course that gave her the tools to succeed in her current career as the vice operation officer for Nawafith leading a team and hiring General Assembly graduates just like herself.

After completing the digital marketing accelerator course Al-Arifi attended a conference led by a CEO of a law firm. While he was speaking she searched his name.

“The first thing I did was check his company’s digital image as he speaks,” she said. “I approached him straight after the speech to tell him about all the things that he needs to improve regarding their digital marketing and how I can help with it.”

The courses and guidance gave Al-Arifi the confidence to know exactly how to improve the law firm’s online presence and she was immediately hired by the company.

“General Assembly helped me build a strong network, she said. “I got three job offers before graduation through connections via GA community! Not to mention my former manager at the law firm connected me to a friend who was looking for a UX Designer.”

General Assembly said that between 2018 and 2019 almost all of its graduates were hired. More than 80 per cent of the graduates from the Misk General Assembly program reported a positive career impact from the courses.

Almost 60 per cent of the Saudi General Assembly graduates that benefited from the programs were women.

Khaled Al-Rasheed, a math graduate who decided to launch his own E-commerce business, had a passion for data and decided to take the immersive data science course.

“I wanted to work with data. Whether as a data analyst, business analyst or any role that involves data handling,” he said. “Although becoming a data scientist was a goal of mine and it was the reason why I took the course, I was aware of the fact that it takes a lot of experience and knowledge in the field to be an actual data scientist.”

Al-Rasheed said he benefited immensely from the 12 week program. “Everyone at GA, really pushed me everyday and I always found support when I needed it, he said. “I also can’t forget about our instructional associate, Israa, who was there for me when I needed any clarifications or help.”

Al-Rasheed was able to graduate from the three-month data science course and went on to accept a position at a consulting company working alongside the economy ministry on its projects.

“In the course, we learned things like problem solving, how to acquire data, what data do we actually need,” he said. “These things can’t be taken for granted, because in the real world this is the building step to doing the actual work of data Science.”

Misk Academy courses are now available in Riyadh, Jeddah, Madinah and Khobar. (General Assembly)

Speakers lauded the Kingdom’s efforts in the field of environment as part of its Vision 2030 program.

Deal signed to localize 39 jobs at Dammam port

Wed, 2021-03-31 01:45

RIYADH: The General Authority for Ports (Mawani), in cooperation with the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development, on Tuesday finalized deals to localize more jobs at the King Abdul Aziz Port in Dammam.
The deals were signed with Saudi Global Ports Co., Zamil Offshore Services Co., and Saudi Development and Saudi Development and Export Services Co.
Under the agreement, 39 occupations related to port services will be completely localized to encourage Saudi youth join the profession.
It is part of an initiative launched earlier this year to localize more than 300 jobs related to port operations. Young Saudi men and women will receive training to better equip themselves to join the labor market.
Saudi Arabia’s strategic location as a hub connecting Middle East with Europe and Africa will help transform the Kingdom into a pioneering global logistics hub. These factors offer an attractive package for investors interested in capitalizing on the lands owned by Mawani.

Saudi Arabia’s cultural sector ‘flourished’ in 2020 despite pandemic

Wed, 2021-03-31 00:58

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s resilient cultural sector had “flourished” and proved to be a “unifying force” during the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, a government report has revealed.

Despite the many challenges brought about by the global health crisis, the country’s Ministry of Culture recorded a successful year.
In a report titled, “The State of Culture in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, 2020: Digitalization of Culture,” the ministry highlighted areas of achievement and growth along with setbacks and related recovery programs.
Minister of Culture Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan said in the study that although the sector had last year faced unprecedented challenges it had also generated exciting opportunities.
“The Saudi people hold a deep-seated belief in their nation’s cultural vision, and over the course of this past year, they worked diligently to transform that vision into a lived reality.
“Despite tremendous obstacles and social distancing measures, culture and creative industries proved their indispensable value as a potent unifying force,” the prince added.
He pointed out that as the sector had looked inward for inspiration, it was met with “ubiquitous creative talent” and “innovative adaptability.”
The minister said: “The cultural sector stands as a testament to the vitality of the Saudi Vision 2030. The Kingdom is dedicated to promoting and protecting national cultural heritage, while exploring new cultural horizons. Proud of our culture, our journey together will undoubtedly continue to flourish.”
Prior to the start of the pandemic, the ministry said a shift toward the digitalization of various industries was already underway in the country, however, the virus outbreak forced the pace of digital transformation to accelerate and, in turn, amplified its importance.
In the wake of health and safety restrictions introduced to stop the spread of COVID-19, a broad cultural scene began to take hold in virtual space. As the world adjusted to holding events online, with exhibitions and conferences hosted on specialized digital platforms and students joining classes on home computers, the ministry began to see the opportunity in speeding up the digitalization process.

HIGHLIGHTS

• The Year of Arabic Calligraphy was extended into 2021 to ensure that the event’s significance would not be overshadowed.

• A platform, Al-Khattat, was created to provide opportunities to Saudis to learn new skills.

• The fashion industry bounced back as restrictions began to be lifted and takings had shot up to more than SR9 billion by the fourth quarter of 2020.

• The Ministry of Culture also established the Music Commission to develop and regulate the music sector.

As a result, executive decisions were taken to ensure that the Kingdom’s cultural environment was protected from the worst impacts of the pandemic.
A move to extend the Year of Arabic Calligraphy into 2021 was taken in April to ensure that the event’s significance would not be overshadowed as the world focused on fighting COVID-19. The platform, Al-Khattat (the calligrapher), was created with the support of the ministry and provided thousands of Saudis in lockdown with the opportunity to pick up new creative skills or brush up on old ones via free access to an entire database of calligraphy videos.

Despite tremendous obstacles, culture and creative industries proved their indispensable value as a potent unifying force.
Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan Saudi culture minister

One calligrapher, Marwan Al-Ajami, said: “Personally, Al-Khattat was the highlight of my lockdown. I learned new skills that I used to expand my portfolio, and it gave me something to look forward to when lockdown ended, which was showcasing the new skills when it was safe to hold events again.”

Inevitably, some sectors were hit harder than others, and the ministry has been working to restore them to pre-pandemic levels of success.
The Kingdom’s movie festivals were among the cultural events most disrupted by the COVID-19 crisis. The sixth Saudi Film Festival was held online and streamed on YouTube, and the first Red Sea International Film Festival, slated for March of last year, ended up having to be canceled.
There were some bright spots for the Saudi film industry though, with flicks such as the Godus brothers’ “Shams Al-Ma’arif” (“The Book of Sun”) debuting in July after lockdowns were lifted and people were able to attend movie screenings again.
The fashion sector was one of last year’s biggest casualties, as preventive public health measures resulted in a 46 percent decrease in industrial production. Clothing and shoe sale revenues slumped to a low point of SR5 billion ($1.33 billion) in the second quarter of 2020.
But the ministry’s report said that the industry bounced back as restrictions began to be lifted and takings had shot up to more than SR9 billion by the fourth quarter.

The Ministry of Culture and the Saudi Post Corp. on Tuesday launched stamps to mark the ‘Year of Arabic Calligraphy.’ (SPA)

Theater productions suffered significantly with only 68 performances being staged last year, compared to 169 by the same groups in 2019. Many actors, screenwriters, directors, and producers were forced to channel their activities toward virtual events and online workshops.
Hadeel Mufti, theater coordinator at the King Abdul Aziz Center for World Culture (Ithra), held online classes in performance arts.
“This is a dream that the youth of today can work toward,” she told Arab News in July. “What’s great is that there is that push and encouragement from the Saudi Theater (and Performing Arts) Authority and the Saudi National Theater, driving us toward this new field of performing arts.”
The Ministry of Culture also established the Music Commission to develop and regulate the music sector, which it said had remained primarily reliant on amateur and self-trained artists. In a bid to address the shortcoming the ministry this year issued licenses for the first two music academies in the Kingdom.
Recently, the Saudi Standard Classification of Occupations also formally recognized music-related professions, which will make it easier for the country’s musicians to access training and pursue a career in the sector.

Girls’ Council initiatives are ‘source of pride,’ says Saudi Arabia’s Qassim governor

Wed, 2021-03-31 00:50

MAKKAH: Qassim Gov. Prince Faisal bin Mishaal has described the initiatives of the region’s Girls’ Council as a “source of pride” because of their contribution to enhancing the role of women and encouraging them to innovate and lead in all aspects of social work.
He said the Girls’ Council in Qassim was the first of its kind in the Kingdom and that it was an ambitious body benefiting more than 300,000 women.
He added that the governorate had set up an online platform so that women could make the most of their skills and take part in regional programs and initiatives.
He also hailed their role in raising awareness among families about getting the coronavirus vaccine to help society face the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
The secretary of the Girls’ Council in Qassim, Manal Al-Muhanna, said the body had an effective role in empowering women.
“The Girls’ Council was established in 2017 and headed by the wife of the governor of Qassim region, Princess Abeer bint Salman Al-Mandil, and with multiple memberships from 13 governorates in Qassim,” Al-Muhanna told Arab News. “The council follows an institutional process and is subject to survey operations and security control. The council receives advantages and honors at the end of the year. It is not just regular volunteer work.”
She said the council was one of the governor’s initiatives to encourage girls to learn and develop leadership skills for a better future, and that the focus was on girls from all over the country and not just Qassim. It also offered ways to nurture talent and creative energies to foster a healthy environment for their growth, she added.

FASTFACTS

• The Girls’ Council was established in 2017.

• It is benefitting more than 300,000 women.

• One of its key initiatives is establishment of an anti-harassment forum.

• The council has launched several initiatives to empower women.

Al-Muhanna explained that there were four areas of interest for the council — including cultural, technical and media — and that one of the council’s most important initiatives was an anti-harassment forum. The forum was attended by more than 3,000 people, including prominent personalities, and received wide interest.
“The council set up, at the technical level, a large camp for girls to train, qualify and refine a product in the presence of distinguished training competencies from academics in the Kingdom. This camp resulted in the qualification, graduation and employment of 75 students.”
The program lasted 40 days, with nine daily hours of work, and girls and families from villages were hosted for the duration of the camp.
Other technical forums by the council have involved twinning with entrepreneurs from Gulf countries to support emerging projects.
The “Council’s Corridors” is a platform set up by the body, which visits universities and meets female students who are about to graduate.
“We facilitate opening projects and link them to the Development Bank and nonprofit labor institutions. These efforts have benefited about 10,000 female students in Qassim over the course of two years. These figures were the results of the great efforts made by the council and under the direct supervision of the governor and his wife, which helped the council work day and night with high efficiency, like what happened during the pandemic in the Nahr Al-Ataa initiative to help poor and needy families in remote areas.”
The governor’s comments came during a weekly session in Buraidah called “Girls of Qassim, Between Promotion and Empowerment.”
The session was held in the presence of the governorate’s undersecretaries, district officials and council members.

First Saudi licensed coffee evaluator optimistic about industry’s future in the Kingdom

Tue, 2021-03-30 00:36

JEDDAH: Ali Al-Diwani’s career in agriculture “accidentally” led him to become the first licensed coffee evaluator in the Kingdom.

Originally from Jazan, he started his coffee career after he followed in the footsteps of his ancestors as a farmer and fruit trader who exported passionfruit from Hodeidah, Yemen, to Saudi Arabia.
“In 2010, I was invited to a coffee bean workshop in Sanaa, Yemen, presented by a group of Mexican coffee experts. Sadly, the translator faced issues in translating some agricultural terms. Based on my career as a farmer, I have a large agricultural English glossary and I became their personal translator for the rest of their journey,” he told Arab News.
It was the beginning of a journey that changed his life from one of a fruit farmer to a coffee investor, producer, evaluator, vendor, supplier and artisanal roaster.
Two months later, Al-Diwani was assigned to manage a coffee project in Yemen for three years by the same Mexican coffee expert he had translated for.
“There were a lot of inspiring details about coffee that intrigued me to redirect my career. Thus, I decided to specialize in growing coffee.”
Soon afterward, Al-Diwani became one of the leaders in the speciality coffee industry in Saudi Arabia and one of the founders of Caffeine Lab, a pioneer speciality coffee business in the Kingdom.
“My work in agriculture immersed me in great knowledge and gave me the power to start in this world and take fast steps,” he said.
Al-Diwani began to invest in the Burra region in Yemen — which has more than 5 million coffee trees — where he founded the first coffee-growing association and was joined by 500 farmers. “You have to walk for hours or days to reach the forest that contains coffee trees, and it is one of the places that I call coffee paradise — where the mountain turns into a white carpet after flowering, then red after fruiting.”

Science of speciality coffee
The Speciality Coffee Association of America (SCAA) defines specialty coffee in its green stage as “coffee that is free of primary defects, has no quakers, is properly sized and dried, presents in the cup free of faults and taints and has distinctive attributes.”
Al-Diwani, along with his friend Abdullah Bajabaa, established a speciality-grade coffee business called “Kal Coffee” — the first Saudi company to supply green coffee beans and local speciality coffee specifically from Al-Dayer Bani Malik in Jazan.

Ali Al-Diwani

Three years later, he launched his own coffee laboratory, “Origins,” for green coffee beans, with roasters and training space in Jeddah.
Al-Diwani gained a profound experience in speciality coffee through exploration across the world and became one of the Saudi pioneers of the “science of coffee beans” as he calls it.

FASTFACTS

• 80 million kg of coffee beans arrive in Saudi Arabia each year.

• Coffee beans should match a certain standard to be counted as speciality coffee and should have no defects.

• During transportation, fungal damage can affect the bean and ruin the whole harvest.

• Proper storage is essential in maintaining the value of the crop.

“In 2016, I became a licensed coffee evaluator for the Speciality Coffee Association of America,” he said.
Al-Diwani’s passion for coffee redefined the meaning of coffee beans for many young Saudi entrepreneurs by offering them an internationally certified course at Origins. It consisted of educational courses in a number of specialities within the coffee industry including barista skills, brewing, green coffee, sensory skills and roasting.
He trained more than 50 Saudi certified coffee specialists between 2017-2020. “There is absolutely an amazing growth and the performance is getting increasingly better,” he said.
He is also a coffee evaluator at the Coffee Quality Institute of America.

Roasting — from farm to coffee cup
According to Al-Diwani, it requires an artisanal coffee roaster to be able to prepare beans for the perfect cup of coffee. “During the training, I always tell roasters to observe how the beans are being roasted in the machine; it takes five minutes to either burn the harvest of a whole year or make an excellent outstanding coffee.”
There are several stages that coffee cherries pass through before they reach a cup of coffee, he said. A single coffee tree can provide more than six different types of coffee notes and characters, so in every step there are sensitive stages in expenses and risks before the product reaches the consumer.

“One of the most difficult stages in planting coffee is harvesting the appropriate coffee beans for speciality coffee. If the coffee cherries were harvested in a ripe stage, it goes to commercial coffee,” he said. “The harvest must be dried on the same day so that it does not ferment or become moldy.”
Coffee quality relies on several factors including the harvest of the crimson red coffee bean, good drying, storage method, roasting and presentation. Consistency in coffee is a “mark of excellence,” he said.

Speciality coffee business in Saudi Arabia
Al-Diwani said that many young Saudis share the same obsession with exploring the world of speciality coffee as the country is one of the few where such a diversity of coffee processors and types can be found.
“The future of the coffee business in Saudi Arabia is very promising at the level of production, and in the market it is considered as one of the fastest-growing markets,” he said.
As for those who are planning to start a coffee business, Al-Diwani said that passionate coffee entrepreneurs have to have a full understanding
of how Arabica coffee is evaluated and graded.
The high demand for coffee in Saudi Arabia awakened coffee companies around the world to the idea that Saudi Arabia is a huge market for speciality and commercial coffee. “Eighty million kilograms of coffee beans enter Saudi Arabia every year, and the demand is increasing as people here won’t accept low-quality coffee,” he said.
“We are dealing with a huge number of international green beans companies and most of them started to open branches in Saudi Arabia, so that is an indicator that the coffee market in the Kingdom is big and expanding tremendously.”
There are three main aspects for a speciality coffee business to consider in order to stand out from other coffee startups in the Kingdom, according to Al-Diwani. “First is the location, second is the consumer experience and the high quality of the coffee, third is to have a well-trained barista and a professional coffee roaster.”
Al-Diwani is currently developing a roasting machine line called DQ Diwani Quality.
In 2014, he won an Italian photography award for an image taken in Burra, Yemen, that showcases the variety of color in coffee cherries spread on rooftops to dry.
