RIYADH: The EU hailed the outcome of the 41st Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit on Wednesday, highlighting that it would promote regional stability.

Josep Borrell, high representative of the EU for foreign affairs and security policy, said the GCC member states have reached an agreement on the full normalization of relations among themselves.

“It was announced last Monday that the airspace and land and sea borders between Saudi Arabia and Qatar will reopen,” he added, emphasizing that they would greatly promote regional stability and restore the unity and full cooperation of the GCC.

He praised the role of Kuwaiti and US mediation throughout the GCC crisis, stressing the bloc’s readiness to support more regional integration within the GCC, and to strengthen its long-term partnership with its members.

Nasser Alabdli, chairman of Developing Studies Center in Kuwait, told Arab News that this was the first time the summit had achieved something so universally popular “especially after the previous differences, which have undermined Gulf cooperation.

Nayef Almotawtah, editor in chief of Mobasher News Network in Kuwait, told Arab News that the resumption of Gulf relations was good for all member states.

“We hope that the Gulf region will totally overcome the conflict and focus only on the mutual interests and benefits of all Gulf peoples,” he said.

The late Kuwaiti Emir Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah’s efforts at conciliation were fruitful, he said, noting that he continued to exert great efforts in this regard until his death.

“Today’s Emir of Kuwait Nawaf Al-Ahmed followed in the same footsteps, and efforts for conciliation succeeded. Some issues were sorted out and resolved while some remain unresolved; however, the ministers of foreign affairs will reach an agreement,” he said.

He also stressed the important role of King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman in taking the Kingdom to the forefront of advanced countries.

Meanwhile, Bahraini journalist Najat Ali Showaiter expressed her happiness that the relations between the Kingdom and Qatar are back to normal. She told Arab News: “Relations will be resumed and the relationships between all Gulf states will be enhanced after a long period of time. This is a new start for the future of Gulf states. It is a good chance to resume the previous projects that stopped.

Saudi writer and analyst Mubarak Al-Aati said that reopening the borders with Qatar was a courageous move from the Kingdom, which reflects the keenness of its leadership to unite the Gulf states and end differences that undermined bilateral relations.

He added: “King Salman is keen to make Gulf countries join forces to face risks and threats surrounding the Arab World.

“The resumption of Saudi-Qatari relations will end the differences which enemies used for their benefit and also put an end to differences that were detrimental to Gulf states and peoples alike. Social and economic life will return to normal and progress will flourish.”
